Nathaniel is 4 Months Old!

My sweet baby is 4 months old!  (Posting a few days late since I was waiting for the stats from his doctor appointment)

Hi, People!
He has changed so much since last month.  He smiles and laughs often, especially during diaper changes (I don't know why).

He has gotten a lot stronger.  He holds his head up so well. He also tries to sit up, but he can't quite make it. ;)

He's been sick lately. It hasn't been fun for any of us.  He had a virus that caused a rash on his face as well as other issues.  He had some trouble sleeping, which is also hard!

He is 23.75 inches long, with is the 3rd percentile.  He weighs 13 pounds, 3 ounces, which is in the 7th percentile. His head circumference is 16 inches, which is the 16th percentile. He's still a tiny guy! He is wearing his 0-3 month clothes still and Size 1 diapers. Looking back, by this point, Jeremiah was in 9 month clothes and size 3 diapers.  They are very different.

Jeremiah adores his little brother.  He talks to him in a baby voice and kisses him multiple times each day.  He loves to show him to people - grabbing their hands and running over to show them "baby! baby! baby!"

Nathaniel sleeps really well. He generally wakes up one time at night. He still sleeps next to our bed in either his co-sleeper or his Rock and Play.

Some of his favorite things are his bath, his Kick and Play piano, his pacifiers, and of course being cuddled.

Nathaniel is a great joy.  We love him and his sweet little personality so much!

Favorite Childhood Book

I loved reading as a child, and still love it today. I had so many favorite books. But if I had to choose just one book series, it would be (hands-down) the Babysitter Club books. I owned so many of these books and borrowed the others from the library over and over and over.

I still remember the first one I read. It was called Kristy's Big Day. I borrowed it from my best friend at the time, Rachel.  It was the 6th book in the series. Kristy, the president of the Babysitters Club, is in her mom's wedding. The book follows her moving into her stepfather's house and the preparations for the big day.

I think it was partly due to that being the first one in the series I read that Kristy was always my favorite character. She was outspoken and a little bossy.  I was way more like her best friend Mary Anne at the time, but I think that's why I liked Kristy - she had leadership skills and strength that I admired.

I think the series finally ended somewhere around 150 books. I stopped reading somewhere around 100.  No particular reason, I just outgrew them.

I tried re-reading one of them recently, and to say it wasn't the same is an understatement! I do still have a number of them in my basement that I'm hoping my kids will want to read one day!

If I Won the Lottery...

If I won the lottery, I would quit my job. (Assuming, of course, I won a large sum and not like a $3 scratch off.)  Being able to spend all day with my babies would be so nice!

John would quit his job as well.

Healthy sums would be put aside for both boys' future education.

Instead of daycare, Jeremiah would most likely go to some form of school 2-3 half days a week for socialization.

I would hire a full time maid and cook.

I would hire a personal trainer to help me at the gym.

And travel. I would travel.  I would so enjoy traveling more.  Singapore to see my brother and his family, Europe, warm weather locations during snowy times (like today).... so much fun.

We would also give a lot of it away.  The Bible says that true religion is supporting widows and orphans-  we would do this. We would also be heavily involved in fighting human trafficking.

I've never bought a lottery ticket, but this post makes me want to start. ;)

A Trip to the Library - Jeremiah Style

Life is never dull these days.  My boys keep me busy!  Especially interesting is going out in public with the boys. Almost without fail, there is an incident at some point that makes me a) wish we had stayed home, b) turn red with embarrassment, c) wonder if CPS is being called on me, or d) all of the above.

Today at the library, we had several b) incidents. Luckily, no c)s.

We get to the library.  I go to the checkout desk to discuss with the librarian some fines on my account that I wanted to see if they would waive since they were from when Jeremiah was in the hospital and I was one day late returning things. The good part of the story is that they did.  But while I was resolving the issue, Jeremiah kept pointing to any man he saw with kids and yelling "Daddy! Daddy!"  I think in his mind, if you are a man with kids, you are a daddy.  I said to the librarian "He's not shy about pointing at people, is he?"  She said "He keeps calling all those men Daddy. Do you not know who his father is?"  Yes, the logical assumption is when a 21 month old says "daddy" in public is that the mom has no idea who fathered her child.  Incident #1.

Jeremiah loves the library. He loves the books to some extent, but he really loves the toys.  The kids' room is fantastic.  Blocks, a toy kitchen, a train table - he goes from toy to toy over and over. It's a perfect activity for a rainy Saturday like we had. I can sit in peace with Nathaniel and watch him play. He brings me things to show me, and it's so cute.  (He brought me an alphabet magnet. It was a purple E. He said "EEEEEEE!!!!! Purple!!!!!!!" He's getting smarter and smarter!)

After about TWO HOURS, I was ready to leave. We hadn't eaten lunch yet. It was infringing on his nap time. Time to go, right?  Wrong.  He did not want to leave!  Finally, I was able to get him out of the children's room (but not before one last trip to the fish tank where he pointed at a fish and screamed "DADDDDDYYYYYY!"). We went upstairs to the adult section so I could pick up one book I wanted. He got to push the buttons on the elevator, and was very excited.

I quickly get my book, and we go downstairs.  As I'm waiting to check out, Jeremiah decides to make a break for it.  He starts up the flight of stairs.  I asked him to come down. He refused. I go up after him. When I get to him, he giggles and goes limp. I have to carry him down the 6 steps he had climbed.  Incident #2

Because he ran away, I told him he would need to sit in the stroller while I finished checking out.  So I put him in, but didn't strap him in since it would only be a minute.  As I'm checking out, he pops up, standing on the stroller seat. I gasped, because it's dangerous and I had no idea he'd be able to do that, and said "Sit down!"  He thought that was funny. He then proceeded to point his finger at me and yell repeatedly "Sit down! Sit down! Sit down!"  Then he popped down and jumped back up to resume yelling "Sit down! Sit down! Sit down!"  People were staring. It was not very library-ish behavior. Incident #3

It was a good trip. I guess it's good we stayed there so long since it will probably be some time before I can show my face at the library again.

The face of mischief

November Blog Challenge Day 5 - Fears

I seem to have gotten a bit behind on my blog challenge.  Kids. They suck the life out of you as well as the blogging time. :)  Oh, and work.  My boss seems to think my hours there should be focused on my non-blogging pursuits. You know, like the stuff he pays me for.

Anyway, I digress. I am going to catch up on the posts that actually interest me to write.

Fears - I'd like to say I don't have any.  But it's not true.

My number one fear these days is something happening to my kids. I hear stories of kids dying in daycare, SIDS, and so many awful ways.  I can't imagine what it would be like as a parent to go to get your child up for the day only to find they were no longer alive. How do you move on from something like that?  I can't even imagine it.

To some degree, I also fear failure and disappointing others, whether it's at home or work or as a friend.  I want to live up to my expectations and others' expectations as well.

And spiders. I'm not going to explain that one further, because.... yuck.

Election Day!

Today is Election Day!  There are many important issues going on in our country that we get to voice our opinion on today.

Election Day always brings back a lot of memories for me, good and bad.  When I was a sophomore in college, I first volunteered for a campaign. This one was for a state senator. Sadly, we lost. :(  (I am happy to say that the candidate won a different race 2 years later.)

Since then, I've worked in multiple other campaigns. They are always interesting, fun, hard work, etc.  My favorite memories include the victory parties (often held before you know if there is actually a victory).  In 2004, when Bush won over Kerry, a lot of the campaign staff had to leave unexpectedly - there was a battle at some polls over voting and they had to go be legal representation. It was kind of crazy!

 God bless America!

November Blog Challenge Day 2 - Favorite Quote

I love this quote.  We spend so much time competing with others, whether outright or in our heads, that we can lose focus on what's important.  That wasted time and energy distracts us and drains us. We lose productivity at work, enjoyment of family time as we compare our lives and family members to others, and so much more.

What is your favorite quote? Are you participating in the November blog challenge?

November Blog Challenge - Day 1

Twenty facts about me!

1) When I was 14 and 15, I was obsessed with painting my nails. I would literally change my nail polish every day.  I loved giving myself manicures. Now, I don't think my nails have been painted for about 6 months and if I have to choose between a pedicure and manicure, I would choose a pedicure.

2) I love cheesy romantic comedies.  Most movies that get great reviews, I don't enjoy that much. Movies that are dismissed as fluffy or empty? I love.

3) One exception to this is the Hunger Games series.  Mockingjay Part 1 comes out this month and I'm excited. (Even though it was the weakest book in the series AND I don't like that they're splitting it into two parts)

4) My favorite color for years was purple, but now it's pink. Purple is still way up there too though.

5) I'm obsessed with proper grammar.  I hate when people misuse "their," "your," "except/accept," and more.

6) My cats are named after a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, a Star Wars character, and a 50s sitcom star.

7) My favorite tv show of all time is probably Gilmore Girls. But I never watched it when it was actually on the air, only after it had been off about 2 years.

8) I love everything about the Christmas season except the weather.  Not a fan of the cold. If we could have Christmas with fall temperatures, it would be ideal.

9) Being a mom is the most wonderful, challenging, exhausting, rewarding thing I've ever done.

10) I was sure Jeremiah was a boy even before the gender revealing ultrasound, but with Nathaniel, I thought he was going to be a girl until the day before. Then I knew he was a boy too.

11) The tv show that I have watched the longest is probably Survivor. I've watched all but one season. I think they're on something absurd like season 27 by now.

12) I love traveling and planning trips.  Currently, I'm planning a Chicago trip.

13) Tomorrow I am going to get out all my Thanksgiving decorations, assuming the boys allow this.

14) Despite being tired, I have a bad habit of staying up way too late.  It's the only time of day that I have peace and quiet to do important things like watch reality tv and blog.  Plus I'll decide to go to bed and then realize that right after I do, Nathaniel is due to wake up to eat.  If I stay up though, he tends not to wake up when I expect it.  But if I go to sleep, he always wakes up.

15) Each year, I challenge myself on not turning on the heat until I have to.  My proudest is when I can make it til December.  This year, my mom turned it on while I was at work one day. In OCTOBER. This is unacceptable.  Of course, the last day of October involved 30ish temperatures and snow, so I suppose it is fine.

16) I have a love/hate relationship with the gym. Currently, it's more hate than love. I'm hoping the pendulum swings back toward love soon.

17) In college, I majored in elementary education, but if I could have picked anything to major in without worrying about career prospects afterward, I would have majored in history. History classes were my favorites.

18) On that note, sometimes it's amazing to me how many big things I've lived through that will make the history books.  When you stop to think of it, a lot of huge events have happened.  Like right now, I'm watching a movie about the 2000 Presidential election.  That was an amazing time. I remember every day watching for updates trying to figure out what would happen.

19) My favorite store is Target. You can get everything there - from diapers to baby pictures!

20) I miss the days that I blogged more. That's one reason I'm doing this blog challenge!
