Life Lately with Jeremiah!

Jeremiah is 24 weeks now. He's getting so old!

What's new with him?

Well, he adores eating his feet. It's so cute! If he's awake and on his back, his feet are almost always in the air.

He rolled over for the first time this week and now does it a lot.  Back to front only and not the other way around.

He is starting to eat a little food more often - he's had rice cereal, oatmeal cereal, sweet potato puree, and prune puree.  He doesn't do the greatest eating it. I think he still has part of his tongue thrust reflex.

He is laughing more and more. He is seriously such a happy, happy baby most of the time. His smiles are absolutely infectious!

The other day I looked at him, and I'm pretty sure he grew 2 inches overnight. He just seems so long now!

He had a great time with Aunt Delia, Uncle Cameron, Caleb, and Evan. More on that later.

Overall, he gets cuter by the day and we fall a little more in love with him each day.

Happy Father's Day!

I started this post Saturday..... it was supposed to post on Sunday. Add in a sick child, an out of town trip, and it didn't get finished.  So, I'm posting it now. :)

Today's post is dedicated to two incredible men.

The first is my dad.  My dad has always been there for me. He worked hard to support our family. He's a kind, giving man.

My dad set a good example for us growing up - he took us to church regularly and served in the church. Each morning, he would read his Bible while eating breakfast.  For years, I did the same.
My dad loves having fun with us too. Whether it's playing a game, telling dumb jokes that we make fun of him for, or teaching us to love Star Wars, he's done it all. :)

Dressing like a bride for my shower!
 I love you, Dad!

Another amazing man became a dad this year! My husband John.

John didn't have much experience with babies until Jeremiah arrived, but that didn't stop him from being a great father. He loves Jeremiah with his whole heart. He can't stand to see him upset.
First time holding Jeremiah!

I know that as Jeremiah grows up, he's going to have a great relationship with his daddy.

I'm so happy that my son has two such special men to look up to as he grows!

A Little Perspective

I'm writing with a heavy heart tonight.... heavy eyes from tears that have been cried and tears that have been suppressed.

After picking up Jeremiah tonight, we had a stop to make.  We stopped at a funeral home.

It was a pretty standard visitation. You greet the family, sign the guestbook, express your sympathy, shed a few tears, look at pictures, and pay your respects.  Nothing spectacular, right?

Only this time, I did not express my sympathies to the deceased's children. No sentiments like "He had a long full life" or "She is no longer in pain were expressed."

Because I was talking to the parents and grandparents of the deceased.

The deceased was a 5 day old beautiful baby.

A baby.... a loved, wanted, prayed for, sweet baby girl.

Her name was Hannah. She has two older brothers - ages 2 and 1.  She has two wonderful parents. She has 4 grandparents who are kind, giving, loving people. She has aunts and uncles, extended family, friends all hurting, aching, missing this sweet girl.

She was born prematurely. She was born with a previously undetected genetic condition that was fatal.

We prayed for healing. We prayed for her to live. Unfortunately, our prayers were not answered the way we had hoped. They were not answered the way we would have chosen.

Nobody would choose for a 5 day old baby to pass from this life to eternity the day before Father's Day.

Nobody would choose for parents to bury their infant daughter 6 weeks before her due date.

Tonight, I'm holding Jeremiah a little extra tight.

Saturday, when I got the news Hannah was fading fast, I was struggling with a sick, cranky baby.  A baby who was screaming. A baby who was in pain. A baby who I could not seem to make happy. And then I stopped.

I thought of my friend who I knew would give anything to have a cranky day of a cold with her daughter.

As I was up Saturday night with a teething baby who wouldn't let me sleep, I thought of my friend who would gladly be up all night tending to her daughter. A friend who was very likely up all night crying and planning a funeral instead of feeding a newborn.

And I hugged my son a little extra tight and thanked God once again for the miracle He blessed me with.

And if you have a moment, please say a prayer for my friends Amanda and Dominic as well as their families.

Throwback Thursday - Family!

Okay, so this isn't instagram with #tbt everywhere, but.... I feel like reminiscing, so I'm declaring today "Throwback Thursday" on my blog.

My family is in town from Singapore! Yay!  In honor of that, I'm throwing in some old pictures from past visits.

I love these guys so much.

Jeremiah is 5 Months Old!

My sweet boy is 5 months old today!

Every day Jeremiah changes. I'm not exaggerating. It's so much fun to watch him take in the world, learn more, get stronger, etc.
I weighed him today, so it was an unofficial weight, but the result? 20 pounds, 3 ounces.  Yikes! My baby is huge! I'm thinking I can forego the gym and just lift him a little more. Yes?
He finally got over his cold, but replaced it with something else super fun - teething! No teeth have broken through yet, but oh the drool. And everything that can possibly be crammed in his mouth is crammed in his mouth. Some days, when you can tell he's in pain, he also gets very crabby.
His sleep has improved some since last month. Some nights he is only up twice instead of three or four times. Other nights he's up 3-4 times. He tends to cat nap, but has also started taking longer naps some days. It's honestly about 50-50 right now.
We tried him on oatmeal cereal and sweet potatoes, but it seemed to upset his system so we're going back to our plan on waiting til about 6 months.
We're back to cloth diapers most of the time during the day.  They are cute, but make his bottom look so big! He's already in mostly 9 months and some 12 months clothes!
His eyes are still a light blue. His eyebrows and eyelashes are darker, so there is a nice contrast between those and his eyes. Very handsome, I think.
Jeremiah met his Uncle Cameron and Auntie Delia this month, along with his cousins Caleb and Evan. Mommy is definitely his favorite person. He gives lots of laughs and squeals for me.  He also will hold onto me or my clothes if he doesn't want put down. He also loves Daddy a lot and laughs and smiles for him.  But right now, he's definitely a Mommy's boy.
I found this list on a friend's blog. It has milestones for 5 months. It lists what skills are advanced for the age, what are emerging (meaning about 50% of babies can do it), and what skills most have mastered. Now, obviously every baby develops differently.  Also, Jeremiah's adjusted age is only 4 months. But he's pretty close to the 5 month skills, so I'm still going to list those.
Mastered Skills
  • Distinguishes bold colors- I think so! Things definitely catch his eye, especially if they light up. He LOVES his Baby Einstein musical turtle!
  • Plays with hands/feet-  Absolutely. His hands are in his mouth much of the time and he likes grabbing his feet too. :)
Emerging Skills
  • Recognizes own name- I think so. He seems to stop what he's doing if I say his name
  • Turns to new sounds- oh yes. He has been doing this for a long time. He likes music especially.
  • Rolls over in both directions- No. He gets about halfway there and then gets bored with it. :)
Even month stickers go into the mouth
Advanced Skills
"Quick! Take the picture while I'm still upright!"

  • Sits momentarily without support- Kind of. Emphasis on the momentarily.
  • Mouths objects- Yes. Yes. Yes. For sure. He loves to stick everything in his mouth. The other day I saw him go from petting Leo (really, grabbing and pulling Leo's fur) to trying to get it to his mouth. Uh, no. That doesn't need to happen. But I'm glad Leo is so tolerant!
  • Separation anxiety may begin- a little bit.  He has definitely become more aware when I hand him to someone he's not as used to and he'll cry at times if I'm not in his line of sight.
"Hurry! We both know this doesn't last long!"
Such a fun age! This has definitely been my favorite month so far. I miss some of the newborn cuddles, but the emerging personality is even better! And he's still a little snuggle-bug so I get lots of cuddles too. :)

"This is how I hold up my head like a big boy!"

"Look, Mommy! I got it off!"

"You can't see my sticker!"

"It's all mine!"
