2012 Year in Review!

Wow.... it feels like just a little while ago that I was writing my 2011 recap! And now here it is, time for a 2012 year in review! It has been a very eventful year.

My year started at home - we didn't do anything for New Year's Eve and I think John was asleep by around 10:30. :) I stayed up to ring in 2012.

Looking back to January, I can think of two big events that defined the month. The first was on January 6th, when we adopted Leonardo!

The other big event was John's birthday week! After months and months of planning and secrets, I managed to surprise him multiple times. The biggest surprise was flying his mom up from Alabama and the second was his surprise 30th birthday party!  I am happy to say that the surprises all went well and he thoroughly enjoyed his birthday. :)

Another big thing from January was that we helped launch a new church plant from our "main church."  I am the children's pastor and John (when he was able to attend) was on the worship team.

In February, I worked like crazy due to tax season really picking up. :) John had his own job changes as he went from doing sales (which he didn't like) to working in the warehouse (which he likes much better).  We also adopted our little diva kitty, Leia.

We also celebrated Valentine's Day and my birthday, though both were low-key as John had to work late both nights.

March was another month of crazy, crazy work for me.  I think I was averaging about 60 hours a week.  It's kind of a blur of a month.

April was an exciting month.  We went to Niagara Falls (and saw family along the way), tax season ended, and I got pneumonia.  It was quite a month. :)

I also determined that with tax season finally over, I could start taking off the weight that I had put on (several pounds of it during tax season from grabbing food here and there).  Ha..... I think we all know that didn't happen!

In May, I continued to struggle with double pneumonia and a double ear infection (I came down with it right at the very end of April - the 30th, I think).  Other than that, I took a business trip to Denver. There I learned that before you critique a company, you should make sure your dinner mate isn't the CEO of said company. Oops. :)

The other big part of the month was Memorial Day weekend when we traveled to Alabama to see family and friends down there.  It was also while we were down there that I started suspecting our family was growing.... as was my waistline. :)

However, I don't think anything that happened January through May compares to the month of June. On June 2nd, I found out we were having a baby! On June 3rd, our 9 month anniversary, I told John. :)  Over the next few days and weeks, we told close family and friends.  In not as exciting news, I also temporarily went back to 60 hour work weeks due to GM changing their pension.  So I was dealing with morning sickness, fatigue, and crazy work hours. :) This would last through July.

In July, we also took a vacation up north with my family.  That was one of the highlights. In fact, other than working like crazy and my first hospital visit, that's all I really remember about July. :)

Oh, and in July, I may also have possibly taken my pets to work with me one day.....

The highlight of August was our church's youth conference. I oversaw an area and was at all the services. John was at as many as his work schedule allowed. It was an amazing time!  Then the day after the conference I was back in the hospital. Oops.  It was also in August that we found out that one of our baby's test results had come back abnormal. (I'm happy to say that while they can't say conclusively until birth, the follow-up tests were all fine.)

September was a month of excitement.  We celebrated our first anniversary! Yay! We also found out we were having a boy!

In October, we visited family in Ohio, but other than that, it was a fairly low-key month. Lots of work as usual, but nothing super spectacular.

In November, we celebrated Thanksgiving and were diagnosed with pre-eclampsia and put on partial bedrest. (Total bedrest some doctor's said, but the overall consensus has been modified is fine.) Once bedrest started, there wasn't much excitement to add to the blog. :) Unless you consider about 28 dr. appointments and hospital visits a month exciting.

Thanksgiving

December, of course, we celebrated Christmas and had Christmas activities leading up to it. :)  Other than that, I've rested and worked when I could.

2012 has been an exciting, busy, tiring, at times scary, wonderful, fun (and so many more adjectives) year.  But I have to say, I'm really, really looking forward to 2013!

Sunday Social - New Year!

Sunday Social this week is about New Years and New Year's Eve!

1. What is the best New Years Eve you've ever had?

I used to love New Years' Eve parties at church.  We would have a potluck dinner, a service, and then stay until like 5 a.m. playing volleyball in the gym.  It was a lot of fun.  However, that all ended years ago.  Since then, my best New Years' Eve was one where I was babysitting for about 12 kids while their parents were at a wedding.  I was hired (and very well paid!) to babysit the children in a hotel suite.  The kids were great. We watched movies, played games, and just had a total blast! My friends Jody and Joy joined us for a while and Jody gave them rides on the Murphy bed.  There was also lots of junk food. I believe that was in 2002.

2. Are you doing anything for NYE this year and if so what?

As of right now, no plans.  We both work that day and then with the whole bedrest thing, we probably will just chill at home. We're considering having friends over, but we'll see.

3. Name a book we should all read come January?

I'm going to be reading one of my new Christmas books and continue reading baby development books.  But you should all read a good book too. :) I'm planning on reading Reached, the third book in the Matched trilogy, so if you haven't read the first two, you should. Otherwise, you should read Reached like I'm going to. :)

4. What are your New Year's resolutions?

Have a healthy baby boy. :) Adjust well to motherhood.

34 Weeks!

We are 34 weeks along! Six more to go!

How big is baby?
He is approximately the size of a butternut squash. (Though he's bigger than average as we have said before, so he's really probably bigger than that.) He's an estimated 6.5 pounds and 19 inches!

Total weight gain/loss:
I lost weight again this week. Total gain so far of 9 pounds. I have NO idea how that happened. My appointment was the day after Christmas and after our delicious Christmas Eve meal where I think I ate enough for 5 and our two Christmas day meals, I was expecting a large gain - the kind that makes them think I'm retaining a ton of fluids due to my pre-eclampsia and instead I have to explain "No, I just ate like a pig the last two days" type of gain. I didn't even bother taking off my shoes for weighing like I usually do. I was like "It's going to be such a gain that it really doesn't matter." But apparently.... I was wrong.

Sleep:
I'm tired, and sleeping great some nights. Other nights, I'm tired but not sleeping well. I did take naps two consecutive days this week which isn't like me.

Movement:
He moves a ton. His favorite times seem to be around 3 a.m.  But he likes to move around and I can often see him moving from outside my stomach!

Symptoms:
Pre-eclampsia (and a lot of symptoms that go along with that)
Contractions (especially if I've done much at all that day)
Having to go to the restroom a lot

Food cravings:
Nothing comes to mind. Monday I was craving food in general for much of the day, but I think that had more to do with not really eating breakfast or lunch. :)

Food aversions:
Nothing specific.

Gender:
BOY

Belly Button in or out?
In but getting kind of shallow!

What I miss:
Moving around easily and taking deep breaths.

What I am looking forward to:
Meeting my little man. :)

Milestones:
Baby did fine my non-stress tests and biophysical profile this week. He's still head down!  Unfortunately, my blood pressure has gotten worse - no fun at all.

He's apparently starting to recognize simple songs. :) I guess I should start singing lullabies to him!

Christmas Recap - Part 1

I was a little worried about how Christmas would turn out this year.  Between being on modified bedrest, both of our families being so far away, etc. I just wasn't sure how it would feel! Would it still feel like Christmas?  It was a strange Christmas season without being able to do a lot of Christmas activities - almost no shopping, Christmas programs, etc.  I'm happy to say that it was a wonderful Christmas!

We don't have much family in the area, but we have lots of friends who are like family. :)

Christmas Eve during the day was a little bit of a rough day. John had to work from 5 a.m. to 1:00. I had to go to the hospital for an NST.  Unfortunately, I was feeling absolutely terrible all day to the point I couldn't sleep the night before (partly from just being miserable, partly from contractions, etc.)  It was to the point that I called the hospital to see if I could go in for my test early. (Plus, my blood pressure was super high all morning!) Then I drove there and I'm sorry to say, I cried in the parking lot. I was scared, lonely, and stressed!  When I got inside (after I made myself stop crying), they decided to have me do extra tests.  Luckily, everything was fine.  Baby looks super strong. The doctor on call was looking at his activity and said "This is a 33 week baby? Really? He's so strong!"

After coming home and resting for awhile, once John got off, we went over to our family friend's house for Christmas Eve dinner.  This would be the home of our "nieces." We had a great time and a delicious dinner. Oh, and way too much dessert. :)

Me with my nieces

There was a lot of love and laughter that night.  And I love the top I was wearing - a gift from my cousin Anita!

Just the three of us

Our gifts from them were Alabama and Michigan State onesies! As well as gift cards and babysitting for a date night once the little man is here. He is now well prepared to root for either team.

While we were there, it started snowing! Turns out we would have a white Christmas after all!

Sunday Social - Favorite Things!

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens.... oh wait, the Sunday Social questions, not the song. :)

1. What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
This is a very tough question. If I could pick a top 3, it would be 1) Moose Trax, 2) Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, and 3) Peppermint (the kind they really only sell this time of year!). Chocolate Peanut Butter would receive an honorable mention.

2. What is your favorite smell?
Probably apple cinnamon. Yum.

3. What is your favorite TV commercial? (Past or present)
I don't really pay attention to commercials, so I'll have to really think about it..... okay, that didn't work. Even googling "best commercials" and "funny commercials" didn't trigger any I really enjoyed. Instead, I'll say almost anything other than those Sarah McLachlan commercials. Those are so, so depressing with the sad songs and sad looking animals. :(

4. What is your favorite day of the week?
Saturday! It's the only day of the week that my husband and I are both off work. We also go to church that night which I enjoy.  But it's a service where I'm not working at the way I do Sunday service, so it's more relaxing.  Overall, the whole day is just more relaxing.

5. What is your favorite way to waste time?
Reading, probably. Or watching tv. Or surfing the Internet/blogging.  It all depends on my mood and how tired I am.  But I don't think it's a total waste of time; some relaxing is good for us!

6. What is your favorite article of clothing?
Shoes. I love my shoes. I can't wait until I can wear more than flats again!

Happy birthday, Leo!

My first ever pet has a birthday today - he is 4!  But this is his first birthday since he became mine.

The day after we got our handsome boy
I'm firmly convinced that Leo is the best cat ever. He is such a sweet boy, a great big brother to Leia (always looking out for her if she sounds upset), and friendly to anyone who visits!

Is this for us to play with?

It's his personal mission to convert anyone who says they don't like cats - he chooses to give them lots and lots of attention. :)  He means well.

Cuddly kitty taking a nap on Mommy

"Please pet my tummy, Mommy!"

"I'm just going to rest here on my little brother."
He's not as playful as Leia as he's not a kitten, but he's still playful.  His favorite thing to do though (other than eat....) is to just lay in my lap and purr.  He's a sweetie, and quite handsome in my opinion.
Leo loves boxes

"Aren't I cute?"

Just chilling....

Even when we adopted Leia, we had none of the usual problems with adding a cat to another cat - he just wanted to be friends! She was more hesitant, but he was like "A new friend! Yay!!!!!" In fact, he was quite confused by her hesitation. :)

"Oh the indignities...."

"I'll help wrap presents!"

Super kitty!

January 6, 2012 was a great day; the day Leonardo DaVinci joined our family!

Happy birthday, Leo! We love you!!!!
