Sunday Social - Careers!

Sunday Social

1. What is your dream job?

Oh goodness. Tough question. Can I say stay-at-home mom?  That would be ideal.   But I don't necessarily consider that a job, so I guess I should list other things.  I'd love to head up a non-profit that donates money to causes. Oh, or to run a human trafficking rescue organization.  Or something in ministry.  I'd also love a job that involves a lot of travel, I think.  Maybe like an author that has to travel a lot for research and gets paid for it.

2. If you had just won the lottery and didn't need to work for money, what would you do with your time?

Well, shoe shop with all that money, obviously! And spend time at Ulta and Sephora!  No, not to be completely shallow, I'd love to travel more. I also really enjoy my volunteer work, and would love to be able to do more of it.  I know I'd stay busy though, because I don't generally like just staying home.  Of course, in a few months, I'll have a little baby. I'm sure he or she will take plenty of my time. :)

3. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I changed my mind CONSTANTLY! A teacher, an accountant, a hair dresser, an astronaut, a flight attendant..... seriously, I changed my mind a lot. At one time, I wanted to be a pediatrician. Then I realized my hatred for blood would probably be a disadvantage in that field.

4. What piece career advice would you give to someone just starting out in your field?

Be consistent and reliable. I think most of my success at work is that I get back to clients consistently, quickly, and professionally.  When you're dealing with people's money, they need to hear from you when they have questions!

5. Biggest Pet Peeves either in life or in blogging or at work:

I'll stick with work so it's consistent with this theme. :)  Probably co-workers who don't take the time to try to figure something out before asking 15 stupid questions every day. Read the notes I put in the system. That's why they're there. Also, office drama and drama causers.  We're all here to do a job. Do it, and move on. I don't care about your petty gossip about co-worker 1 or 2 or why you think co-worker 3 isn't speaking to you.  Oh, and people bringing their children to work when they have the flu and have to miss school. That happened a few months ago. I was MAD.

6. Biggest Fears:

Hmmm.... right now, I'd say something happening to the baby.  I don't believe anything is going to happen, but it's still a little nerve wracking when things are feeling strange and there are all these changes in my body, etc.

12 Weeks!

My baby is now the size of a plum.

He or she is really growing in there!

How far along:
12 weeks!

Maternity Clothes:
I wear dresses most days, but if it's not dresses/skirts, it's almost always maternity pants.  They are just so much more comfortable.  The few days I've worn my regular pants, I get so uncomfortable at different points throughout the day.

Sleep:
Okay. Some nights (last night) great! Other nights terrible.  But, when I sleep, it's the weird, weird dreams continuing.

Best Moment:
When I talk about the baby with John..... it's just fun to think about.

Food Cravings:
Still not a fan of food.  Eggs, sometimes.  Cheese, sometimes.  But mostly, I just eat because I know I need to. Nothing sounds good.

Gender:
I'm about 50-50 on what I think it is.

What I Miss:
Not being sick. But it will be worth it. :)

Symptoms:
Nausea, vomiting, headaches, and being tired. But the tiredness seems to be getting better!

What I'm Looking Forward To:
NT scan is this week! Yay!

Weekly Wisdom:
I've got nothing...

Emotions:
Happy, but also a little overemotional.

Milestones:
One week left in the first trimester!

5QF - 7/27/2012

Linking up for Five Question Friday! 1. What is the funniest thing you saw on Facebook/twitter this week? My facebook was an annoying mix of people saying "Boycott Chick-fil-a!" "Support Chick-fil-a!" "We need more gun control!" "We don't need gun control!" "Romney sucks!" "Support Romney!" Seriously.... politics and current events took over Facebook. Twitter was almost as bad. There was some humor in some of the hyperbole, but it was more laughing at people than laughing with them. 2. What is your favorite Olympic event? I love the Olympics! I already have like 25 hours of it set to DVR! But my absolute favorite event is gymnastics! Particularly women's gymnastics. Team U.S.A. has a chance to do extremely well this year! I don't particularly like a lot of the stuff that goes on in Team U.S.A. gymnastics (why can't the trials determine the team like in other sports? And why with all the scandals about the Karolyis does Marta Karolyi still have like ultimate control over the team? Isn't keeping children from being mistreated more important than the fact that she knows her stuff gymnastics-wise?) but I will still be cheering them on! Loudly and longly! 3. Do your kids to chores around the house? If so, what are they and how old are the children? Do they get paid for them? My only child is currently the size of a plum. So, no chores for him or her. But once he or she is old enough, they will be doing chores. 4. If you get bad service/food do you complain or keep quiet? Bad service, no. Bad food, I do usually complain nicely. 5. If you could pick ONE frivolous item for your home, what would it be? (massive room sized closet? swimming pool? greenhouse? etc...) This summer, probably a swimming pool. It's been SO hot! But some years, you can only use a pool like 3 days a year in Michigan. So, I'm not sure. I would love to be able to add a room to our house! Or a second story!

It's Okay Thursday - July 26, 2012

Linking up with Neely and Amber for their one year anniversary of "It's Okay Thursday!" It's okay..... to have not cooked since Sunday. It's not like you've been eating, so why cook? It's okay..... to get annoyed when 2 of your interviews today stand you up. Oh, and to not call them back. If they had wanted the job, they wouldn't have blown off their scheduled interview time, right? It's okay..... to feel like throwing up at work entitles you to leave early. And that your boss isn't here so it's your decision. It's okay..... to declare tomorrow to be "Bring Your Pets to Work Day." You made sure everyone wasn't allergic. And Friday's during the summer aren't the most productive anyway. It's okay..... to spend your evenings when you feel like garbage laying on the couch watching Gilmore Girls. On that note, it's okay to keep watching Bunheads even though you aren't really enjoying it just because the creator of Gilmore Girls is writing/producing it and you know she has a good show in her.... somewhere. But it's also okay that now, after 7 episodes, you're giving up waiting for her to write a compelling show and cut your losses. It's okay.... to have already set your DVR for the first 4 days of Olympics. I love the Olympics! Link up and giveaway today at Neely or Amber's blog!

Pictures in the Park Part 2 - The Guys

The male portion of the wedding party (other than the cuties, Caleb, Evan, Gage, and Cole) has been pretty neglected on this blog. So for the second part of the pictures in the park, I thought we would focus on the guys.  These friends and family traveled from far away to be with us on our special day (only one was local!).  They all were even willing to wear pink for our big day.

While John was posing with the ladies, I was posing with the guys at first.
From Left - Chris, Jason, Cameron, me, Paul, Stephen, Daniel, and Philip

I think Cameron bore the brunt of the weight on this one. Me plus a 20 pound dress. :) Chris, Stephen, and Philip didn't even appear helpful. :)

John and his guys!
Nice picture of John and the guys

Two of my favorite guys- my husband and my brother (who came from Singapore)

If any of you guys read this, thanks for being a part of our special day!

My First Hospital Visit!

Friday was a very dramatic day here in our house.

Ever since I've been pregnant, I've had a lot of nausea with some vomiting.  Thursday, it all took a turn for the worse.  From lunch time on, I couldn't keep any food down except popsicles.  I thought maybe my lunch time meal was a little spicy, but then it didn't pass. It kept getting worse.

Friday, I woke up hoping for a better day.  It didn't work. I couldn't keep down anything.  While at work, I vomited 3 times, one of those was from drinking water.  Around 1:00, I decided to call my doctor. I thought they'd either tell me a) it'll pass. Just keep trying to drink fluids, etc. or b) you need a prescription for Zofran or something.  Instead they told me option C that I hadn't considered "Go straight to the hospital and tell them you're pregnant and your OB sent you for probable dehydration."

So I left work, called my husband, and told him I was going to the hospital.  He called his boss and his boss said he could either come in late or not at all depending how things went as long as he had a doctor's note that I was at the hospital. So instead of the hospital, I went home so he could drive me there.

Once I got to the hospital, I went to the ER as they had told me. It was the first time (other than once as a young child) that I was there other than the time I was brought by ambulance. So I didn't really know what to do.  But I told the guy at the front why I was there, and then they kind of walked me through it.

Five hours, 2 ivs, a shot of Zofran, blood work, keeping down jello, and a urine test later, I was given the option of going home or staying the night. I chose to go home.  I was feeling enough better and figured I was rehydrated. I really didn't feel like staying the night.

On the positive side, we had excellent care which made me feel good since this is the hospital we'll be delivering at.

Plan for the weekend is to eat bland foods, drink lots of fluids, and rest. :)

Eleven Weeks!

My baby is now the size of a lime!

This post is a day late because my usual Friday blogging time was spent in the ER. Sigh. I would have rather been blogging. :)

How far along:

11 weeks!

Maternity Clothes:

I wore my maternity capris again, but other than that, regular clothes.  I did wear my Bella Band a couple of days.

Sleep:

Not the greatest. I wake up several times a night.  I've been having trouble getting comfortable.  But it's okay.

Best Moment:

I can't think of any one moment this week that sticks out.

Food Cravings:

Yeah, nothing.  Popsicles when I couldn't keep any food down, but I don't know if that counts. Actually, last night I really wanted pizza (our nurse in the hospital was telling us she had it for lunch) but after no food staying down for 24 hours, I didn't think it was the best choice.

Gender

I'm about 50-50 on what I think it is.

What I Miss

Not being sick.  But it will be worth it. :)

Symptoms

Intense nausea, vomiting, headaches, and still acne.

What I'm Looking Forward To

The end of the first trimester sounds good! Plus we have another ultrasound in about a week and a half!

Weekly Wisdom

Call your doctor if you think you need to.  Don't worry about what they'll think.  I almost didn't call yesterday because I thought they would think I was overreacting, but I'm so glad I did.

Emotions

Happy, but also a little grumpy. I think not feeling good and being stressed is getting to me a little. :)

Milestones

Our baby's tooth buds are forming this week. And our first hospital visit is probably a not so good milestone.

Blogger 411

I'm joining From Mrs. to Mama for a link up!

1. How long have you been blogging? And what got you started on blogging? Has your blog changed?
I started blogging in November of 2009.  I had several friends/relatives blogging, and it seemed fun and to be a good community. I've always like writing, so I thought I'd give it a try.  My blog has changed as my life has changed. I blogged a lot about my wedding the past year and now a lot about my pregnancy.  Those weren't exactly topics much in the early days.... or at all.  I also blog a lot more now.

2. Did you go to college? If so where, and what did you study?
I went to Oakland University. I started as a finance/accounting major, but after 6 weeks switched to elementary education with a concentration in social studies. Funny enough, I started my career as a teacher and then switched to finance! God works in mysterious ways. :)

3. Where have you traveled?
Let's see.... states include Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Pennsylvania, New York, California, Idaho, and Washington. Plus the District of Columbia. Other countries are Canada, Belgium, South Africa, Botswana, England, Germany, Switzerland, France, Singapore, and the Bahamas. I love traveling.

4. If you won the lottery, what would be the first thing you would buy?
See previous question - I would buy a fabulous vacation somewhere for me and John.  Then I would focus on practical things like paying off the house, helping others, etc.

5. What are your 3 biggest pet peeves?
People with no manners, people who are consistently late (which I feel is bad manners as well), and people who are stuck-up/arrogant.

6. What is your favorite movie?
If I had to choose just one, The Sound of Music.

7. What is your drink of choice; wine, beer, or liquor. Or Water, Soda, Tea?
Water all the way! Ice water, preferably. And when I'm not growing a person, large quantities of coffee.

8. What is something you enjoy to do when you have me time?
I love to read, nap, or watch chick flicks.  I have a lot of me time in the evenings now because of John's work schedule.  So it does vary.

9. If you could have a $10,000 shopping spree to one store, which store would it be?
Hmmm.... probably Target, because a) you can get a lot of variety of things there and b) I spend a lot there it seems, so it makes sense.

10. Share with us an embarrassing moment of your past? Or present.
I have many. Often, they revolve around my own klutziness. Instead, I shall share a story from my youth with you all.  In 6th grade science, we would often have to take turns reading aloud from the science book. I remember this one passage in particular.  The topic was seeds, particularly naked seeds. To this day, I don't remember what a naked seed is, but I do remember the classmate who sat behind me going "ooohhhhh" every time I said the word naked. Of course, the teacher couldn't hear him. But, it was enough to throw me. After a few times, I started laughing in embarrassment. She kept making me read even though I was having a hard time and was SO embarrassed.

11. What day would you love to relive again?
Probably my wedding day.  It was fun, but at the same time, a little stressful. I'd love to relive the non-stressful moments and remind myself to relax at the stressful points. :) Also, find a way to keep John smiling for all the pictures instead of looking like he was in pain toward the end.

12. If your life was turned into a movie... what actor would play you?
I don't know. I've been told that I look like Andie McDowell (I think it's mostly the hair) and those doppleganger things online say I look most like her, Julia Roberts, or Anne Hathaway.  So I guess one of those?  Alternately, those online things say I look like an Asian male or two that I've never heard of. I prefer the pretty ladies to play me.

Also, I think from Julia Roberts to an Asian dude is a pretty big jump.

13. What are the jobs you had in high school/college/the early years?
Babysitting, tutoring during college, and working at McDonalds from tenth grade through my senior year of college. I also worked in an office for part of college.

14. Show us a picture from high school or college.
I can't access any right now.  I am too old for them to have been digital. lol

15. If you could travel anywhere in the world, all expenses paid, where would you go?
Right this second, Singapore. I miss my cutie pie nephews, as well as my sissy and brother.  But, I'd also love to do a European tour.  Italy, Greece, Ireland, France, England, and more!

16. Show us the most current picture of you or you and your family.
This was at Sleeping Bear on July 3rd. Of course, Leo and Leia are missing from this picture.

17. Where do you see your life 5 years from now?
Well, we'll have a 4 year old! Wow! :)  And hopefully a younger brother or sister for him or her.  Other than that, I can't think it will be too different as far as location or anything. Hopefully, showing love to people more and loving God more.  That's about all. :)

Pictures at the Park - Part 1

After the reception and taking a few more pictures at the church, we freshened up and then headed with the bridal party to take pictures at a nearby park that we love.

There were a few minor hiccups on the way. The limo was supposed to be big enough for the whole bridal party (I reiterated with them several times the number we had and was assured) - it wasn't. Not even close. It fit HALF of us. Also, the air wasn't working. Or it was, but just a little. Keep in mind, it was an unseasonably warm 92 degrees!

So our honor attendants and siblings rode with us. The rest drove on their own.  Then the limo driver got lost. Yes, despite his assurances that he knew where we were going. Sigh.

Jump shot #1
Then we got to the park, and couldn't find the photographer.  Eventually we had to google her webpage from a groomsman's Iphone to call her (she'd been trying to call me, John, my matron of honor, but all of our phones were at the church still).  She and her assistant were at a different entrance of the park.

I loved a lot of the pictures we got, but there are so many that I'm splitting them into separate posts.
Jump shot #2 was better :)

Again, didn't Jody do an amazing job on flowers?

Sunday Social - Travel!

Linking up with Neely and Ashley for Sunday Social again this week. This time, the subject is travel!

Best trip you've ever been on
It's a total toss-up.  In 2004, I went on a trip to Europe - Switzerland, Germany, and France that was amazing. Seeing the Black Forest, Neuschwanstein Castle, Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, and so much more.  It was incredible and I made so many great memories.

But on the other hand, my honeymoon last September was pretty amazing.  We went on a cruise to the Bahamas.  I'm not as much of a beach person, but 4 days with just my new husband without anything we have to do, without the stress of wedding planning, etc? Also amazing.

Two totally different trips, but both so great.

Best idea for a girls weekend trip
I would love to go on a weekend trip with my close girlfriends to NYC - shopping, Broadway shows, and sight-seeing.  I've never been there, but it's somewhere I definitely want to go! I don't think John would like it (too crowded, too many people), but I think some of my friends would love it.

Best idea for a couples trip
John and I went to Niagara Falls earlier this year. I think it's a good couples trip because it's a nice location, good hotels, good restaurants, and not too hectic.

Best vacation on the cheap
I think if you keep an eye out for good deals and do it right, almost any vacation can be done cheaply.  I will say, I think overall cruises are an excellent value as long as you're smart about it, don't spend a ton on extras, etc.  For our one year anniversary, we're doing a pretty cheap trip - we've decided on a staycation. We want to do a lot of the stuff around here (Detroit Institute of Arts, Belle Isle Zoo, etc) and are kind of tired of traveling. So that should be relatively cheap.

Place you most want to visit
If I had to choose just one, I would say Italy.  I really want to go there one day. Rome, Florence, Venice - so many beautiful things to see!

Vacation/Travel necessities
Money/credit card for sure.  This is super important!  ID, passport, etc. especially if traveling overseas. But other than all the practical stuff, for me, I need:

  •  a good book (or 4) or my Nook. I love reading on vacation.
  • Lots of outfits so I don't have to feel like I'm running out of clothes.
  • My camera with my battery charger to make sure I can capture fun memories.
I love planning trips. :)

Ten Weeks!

We have hit double digits! This probably feels like more of a milestone than it actually is. :)

My baby is now the size of a prune, but in my opinion, looks more like a gummy bear. Here's the gummy!
How far along:

10 weeks!

Maternity Clothes:

Here's the thing about maternity clothes. Once you start wearing them, it's easy to justify continuing to wear them.... they are so comfy.  So, I wore one pair of maternity pants this week. I hadn't done laundry.  I was extra bloated. So I wore them. Other days, it was regular dresses or the Bella band.

Sleep:

Bleh. You'd think how tired I am, I'd be sleeping like a champ. I'm not. At all. But when I sleep, I dream strange dreams, so there's that. But I'm tossing and turning every night and my legs are super achy.

Best Moment:

Seeing the baby on the ultrasound. Hearing the little heartbeat and hearing it's a strong heartbeat. 175 beats per minute!

Food Cravings:

Food sounding good? Not this week.

Gender

I'm still leaning toward boy, but having more and more moments when I think it might be a girl.

What I Miss

Not being so tired and nauseous. And my clothes fitting right.

Symptoms

Nausea, cramping, exhaustion, and round ligament pain.  Also, apparently, my skin is averaging my age and the baby's age which brings my skin to teenage level.  Yay for acne!

What I'm Looking Forward To

The end of the first trimester is in sight. I keep hearing I'll regain energy and ability to eat. I hope it's true. In non-pregnancy news, next Friday should mark the end of my 55 hour work weeks, and I'm looking forward to that.

Weekly Wisdom

I've had massive doctor drama that I may or may not blog about later (I've been lazy).  I now have a practice that I'm comfortable with and feel I can trust. So my advice on that is don't settle for a practice that is disorganized, makes you feel unimportant, and makes you worry that they're incompetent.

Emotions

Overly emotional.  Super happy, but also overly sensitive.

Milestones

Well, baby's bones and cartilage start forming this week! Yay!  Also, I think seeing our child and deciding on tentative names are both milestones. :)

Sunday Social - TV!

Linking up with Neely at A Complete Waste of Makeup for Sunday Social!

Favorite TV show of the past:

I don't have just one. I love Gilmore Girls, Everybody Loves Raymond, I Love Lucy, and when I was growing up, The Brady Bunch was my absolute favorite. Oh, and as a teenager, I LOVED Saved by the Bell.

Favorite TV show currently:

Survivor, Castle, and Mad Men

Which Reality Show would you NEVER do?

Oh there are many.  Survivor, because I couldn't be much less of an outdoor person if I tried. Any of the Real Housewives because those ladies seem crazy and trashy (I've never watched, but I've seen clips).  America's Next Top Model because I wouldn't want to appear mostly naked on tv.

Which Reality Show would you LOVE to do?

Amazing Race would be fun and I love traveling.  Biggest Loser might finally get me in shape, though I wouldn't like weighing in on national tv!

TV personality/character that you feel is most like you?

In many ways, Lorelai from Gilmore Girls - we have a lot of similar traits and a love for coffee in massive quantities. :)

June Review

My, how things change in a month.....

You see, I wrote this post June 1st. It reviewed how my goals went for the month of May. A week before that, I wrote this post which included a couple of things I was absolutely, no question going to do this summer....

Surprise! On June 2nd, I found out I was pregnant.  Let's just say that pretty much rules out both weight loss and roller coasters.

So, goals are flexible.  But here is how I did on my goals for last month.

 1) Get healthier overall, but particularly in weight loss.
Hmmm... well, no weight loss. Gain, actually. But I have been eating healthier.  I've been trying to be more active, but it's hard because of the morning sickness (all day!) and the incredible heat.

2) Read at least 25 books in 2012, 10 non-fiction/educational.
I'm way ahead of schedule on this. It breaks down to about 2 a month, and I read 3 last month, including 2 non-fictions.

3) Read through my Bible at least once. This is one thing I try to do every year.
I don't have an exact tally, but I'm confident I'll finish this year.

4) Spend time with a friend at least once a month. Whether it's grabbing coffee, going shopping, etc., it's important to make time for those around us.
Yep! I hung out with Ashley, Linda, and Dy.  Some of my very closest friends. :)

5) Stick to the budget that we have worked out.
I did not do a good job keeping track this month...

6) Blog at least 3 times a month. I love blogging, but I just don't always get around to it!
Easily, easily met this. Let me go back and check - 24 posts. Way more than 3. :)

So, did a good to okay job ono all but number 5.  Will work on that this month!

Nine Weeks

My baby is now the size of a green olive.

How far along:

9 weeks!

Maternity Clothes:

So, in honor of driving 10 hours on Saturday, going on vacation Sunday, and more, I really wanted some comfy pants so I wouldn't have to wear dresses or tight waistbands my whole vacation. (Especially since most of my summer clothes were already tight...)  So, I bought a pair at a thrift store of maternity capris.  They were only $2 so even if I don't wear them much, totally worth it. I loved them.  I wish I could live in them.  :)

I also bought one of those Bella Bands. I wore it one day but didn't love it.

Sleep:

I got some good rest on vacation, but I'm still having a lot of insomnia type moments. Last night, I think I fell asleep around 2. :(

Best Moment:

We were on vacation relaxing for a lot of this week. It was wonderful to relax, think about the baby, and talk about the baby with family. Gage and Cole found out and are SO excited. They have name suggestions and everything!

Food Cravings:

Not much. Cold foods like popsicles and ice cream, but that probably has a lot more to do with the 100 degree temperatures and being outdoor than pregnancy.

Gender

I'm still leaning toward boy, but having more and more moments when I think it might be a girl.

What I Miss

Not being so tired and nauseous. And my clothes fitting right.

Symptoms
Nausea, cramping, exhaustion, and sore breasts. Nothing I can't handle though. ;)

What I'm Looking Forward To
I'm supposed to ACTUALLY have an ultrasound this week. Let's hope this doctor is more reliable than the last.

Weekly Wisdom

I can't think of any right now.

Emotions

Still overly emotional.  But not too bad. :)

Thursday, July 5, 2012

Vacation!

John and I went on vacation this weekend/beginning of the week.  It was really nice to get away! With John's schedule and lack of vacation time, we have to make the most of his 4 day weekends - such as this one because of the 4th of July. So I took Monday and Tuesday off (this was before work got crazy the last few weeks!) and Wednesday we were closed (I was supposed to have today off as well, but that didn't work out so well with the work craziness.)

So Sunday after church, we left for our little getaway to Northern Michigan. We drove about halfway and stopped for the night.  Monday morning, we drove the other 2ish hours to get to beautiful Beulah, Michigan.

I had 2 aunts, 2 uncles, 4 cousins, 1 cousin in law, and 6 first cousins once removed up there as well.  My parents were coming the next day. So it was a family visit in addition to a little trip! We spent some time with my cousins at my aunt and uncle's cottage and then went to our hotel to check in.   We later met up with everyone for dinner.  It was a lot of fun.

The next morning, my parents arrived and we had a day of sightseeing planned! Rain changed our plans around a little, but throughout the day we went to Gwen Frostic, Sleeping Bear Dunes, Lake Michigan, and Point Betsy.  Later, we met my aunt and uncle for ice cream before going back to Point Betsy for the sunset.  We really enjoyed it. However, let's just say, Sleeping Bear Dunes? Easier when you're not still recovering from pneumonia and are pregnant. Oh, and 95 degrees out? Yikes.

We started our Fourth of July with a breakfast with Aunt Joyce and her family. After that, John and I hung around town before going on a boat ride with the cousins. We walked on an old Indian Trail, rested some, and headed out for fireworks.

After fireworks, it was time to head home. We arrived around 3:30 a.m.

Now time to recover from a fabulous trip!
